Water softening

Water softening is the process of reducing the concentration of hardness salts dissolved in it to the required standards. Water with a high salt content is not suitable not only for consumption in food, but also for domestic and industrial needs use. Hard water leads to the scale deposition in pipes, various parts of the equipment, which increases the wear rate and reduces its service life.;

There are several main ways of softening water used on an industrial scale:

  • Membrane - hard water is passed through the molecular membranes of a reverse osmosis unit. The pores of the membranes are so small that they allow water molecules to pass through but keep impurities. Thus, water is 98% salts purified.
  • Chemical method - involves the use of special chemicals that allow to convert water-soluble salt compounds into insoluble, precipitating ones. Chemicals are selected depending on the salts prevailing in water.
  • Ion exchange method - the principle of the method lies in replacement of calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions, the compounds of which do not cause negative impact on human health and production equipment. Ion-exchange water softeners are used for this treatment method. Granulated ion exchange resin fills into the plant tank. Water is passed through an ion exchange resin and the heavy minerals contained in it adhere to the resin. Softened water goes up in the plant tube, and hardness salts are washed out of the resin and collected in a separate tank.
  • Electromagnetic method. Summary of the method: under the influence of an electromagnetic field, the minerals contained in water lose their ability to form bonded deposits. This happens due to the fact that the magnetic field changes the crystal lattice of salts. Crystal growth process stops at the stage of formation of microcrystals, less dense, loose salt compounds that accumulate in sedimentation tanks and are removed from water.

Ion exchange technology
